Cox College Announces Reinvestment Campaign

This article was originally posted on the Cox Health Foundation website and can be viewed here.

For 110 years, training within the walls of Cox College has transformed students into medical professionals. Now, in preparation for the greatest need healthcare has seen in recent history, the those walls are getting some attention. The college is launching a $6.6 million capital campaign to update its facilities and expand its abilities to train medical professionals on Springfield’s north side.

“Thousands of ‘Baby Boomers’ are retiring every single day in the United States, which will make the demand for health care workers very great over the next few years,” says Dr. Robert Lunn, interim president of Cox College. “We’re very excited about the changes and improvements coming to Cox College because we believe they will allow us to prepare increased numbers of health care workers for the need that’s here now and coming soon.”

The renovations touch all four floors of Cox College, which is connected to Cox North Hospital. The lower level will incorporate a new student lounge area to encourage social interaction and relationship development between lines of study. The first floor will be totally focused on students services, featuring areas for registration, financial aid, student government and book store services. The academic floors will hold student study and activity spaces, new conference and group learning rooms, as well as larger classrooms for intended growth.

Outside, the exterior will receive a new façade that will incorporate legacy elements, including George Kieffer’s “Helping Hands” tile mural. The mural will be preserved, and a nearby fountain – reminiscent of many once present on the Cox North campus — will be restored. “Those elements are very important to us, as they’re things that our alumni value and represent our long history,” says Lunn.

Indeed, that history goes deep. Begun as Burge Deaconess Training School in 1907, the college has expanded over the years to offer much more than just nursing.

In addition to undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing, Cox College offers medical billing and coding, radiologic technology and diagnostic imaging, medical assisting, as well as master’s degrees in Nutrition Diagnostics and Occupational Therapy. The college is approved for more nursing students than any other similar college in the region – but with the proposed improvements, the aim is to increase how many students the Missouri State Board of Nursing will allow the college to accept.

“Right now, we’re allowed to accept 250 new nursing students every year,” says Lunn. “We’re hoping, after these improvements, to have our cap changed to 275 and eventually 300. The goal is to prepare for the growing need for nurses as our communities expand and require more health care.”

The college’s campaign was launched a month ago by the CoxHealth Foundation. In that short period of time, several lead donors have already contributed $1.4 million to the construction project.

“The college was a gift to us in 1907 out of a great demand for nursing care at that time,” says Lisa Alexander, president of the CoxHealth Foundation. “Today, donors are reinvesting in this campus, appreciating that without the health professionals it graduates, we could face critical shortages in our hospitals and healthcare settings. As a not-for-profit organization, Cox College is here to serve southwest Missouri by providing a resource that improves all of our lives. We are grateful to all those willing to invest in our students, who become our valued caregivers.”

For more information about the campaign or to donate, call the CoxHealth Foundation at 417-269-7109.

Dr. Amy DeMelo Named President of Cox College

This article was originally published on CoxHealth.com and can be viewed here.

After a nationwide search, the trustees of Cox College are pleased to announce that Dr. Amy DeMelo has been chosen as the college’s next president.

“I am honored to have been given this great opportunity,” says Dr. DeMelo. “This is an exciting time to be involved in health care and education, and I’m looking forward to being involved in the many opportunities ahead of Cox College. We have a wonderful group of people dedicated to making a difference for our students and the community as a whole, and I’m privileged to be part of those efforts.”

While she’s new to the role, Dr. DeMelo is a familiar face at Cox College. She has served as the college’s vice president for Academic Affairs since 2014, and has led the institution through significant development. Two particular examples include growth of the Master of Science in Nursing and the Master of Occupational Therapy programs, which attract students nationwide. She has also developed the region’s only night and weekend program for students seeking to earn an Associate of Science in Nursing degree, which is set to begin in January 2018.

Dr. DeMelo will lead Cox College through a time of great renewal at the institution. A landmark in the Springfield community since 1907, the college is actively working towards realizing a $6.6 million capital campaign, which will completely revitalize the campus through renovated classroom space, new equipment and greater learning environments. One of Dr. DeMelo’s key goals is to increase enrollment, which will ultimately benefit the region by helping supply more health care professionals locally.

“We are very excited about the ideas and initiatives Dr. DeMelo will champion in her role as president of Cox College,” says Jan Harris, chair of the Cox College Board of Trustees. “We wanted to find the perfect candidate for this position, and even though we looked across the country to find the right fit, we were blessed to find the right person already here at Cox College.”

Dr. DeMelo’s influence on Springfield’s educational community goes back even further than her time at Cox College. From 2007 to 2014, Dr. DeMelo served as the director of Springfield Catholic Schools (SCS). While at SCS, Dr. DeMelo helped Springfield Catholic High School become nationally recognized as one of the top 50 in the country. She also led a $13.9 million dollar renovation and expansion of the high school campus, and added a three-year-old preschool program to the school system.

On a personal note, Dr. DeMelo was raised in southern New England. She has degrees in history and administration, as well as an Ed.D in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She was selected as one of the Springfield Business Journal’s Most Influential Women in 2010, and is an alumna of the Leadership Springfield Class 24.

Dr. DeMelo lives in Springfield with her three children.

Canvas creates short film at Cox College

Cox College uses an online learning management system called Canvas to assist faculty with the organization of online classes. Students can find assignments, lectures and news on Canvas. Recently, Canvas released a new video platform called ARC Media, and Cox College has been one of the first institutions to incorporate it into the curriculum of various programs. Not only that, but Cox College students use ARC Media in very unique ways.

A video crew from the Canvas headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah visited Cox College in March to shoot a short film. The purpose of the film is to show what can be achieved through the use of ARC Media, so Cox College students and faculty discuss how they are using the platform to reach their goals in the classroom.

Cox College alumna named “Fittest Nurse on Earth”

Story by Kyle DeVries

Jessica Griffith, a 2013 Cox College graduate, was named the “Fittest Nurse on Earth” by the CrossFit Games Open in 2017. The open category is accessible for anyone in the world, and it categorizes scores by the competitors’ fields. In Jessica’s case, this meant competing against all of the other nurses in the world. Five workouts are released over the course of five weeks, and scores are submitted online. From there, scores are tallied and winners are named.

Jessica might make CrossFit look easy, but her lifestyle revolves around training and proper conditioning. She trains 3-5 hours a day, five days a week, not to mention all the supplemental activities that go along with the actual training. She has to spend time stretching, going to the chiropractor, preparing and cooking meals, taking Epsom salt baths, and making sure she gets an adequate amount of sleep.

With a professional bodybuilder for a father, Jessica grew up with a deep respect and love of physical fitness. The Griffith family had a home gym, where Jessica’s dad taught her how to lift using five pound dumbbells. Jessica also excelled at other physically challenging activities, such as cheerleading and gymnastics. Her family’s background and these skills planted the seed for her future CrossFit career.

Springfield, Missouri became Jessica’s new home in August of 2009 when she started classes at Evangel University. After graduating from Evangel with a BS in Health Sciences and a BSN from Cox College, Jessica discovered CrossFit. In 2016, she moved to St. Louis, to a gym with the toughest competitors and a coach who could take her training to the next level. Additionally, she checked off a box on her bucket list by accepting a position as a traveling nurse in one of downtown St. Louis’ emergency rooms. To remain tax compliant as a traveling nurse, one must go to a different location for at least 13 weeks after a year of employment. Or there is the option to just take 13 weeks off. Conveniently, the competition season in CrossFit is about 13 weeks long, making this the perfect fit for Jessica.

A career in nursing can offer great pay, benefits, and job security, but the road that comes before it can be bumpy. Jessica offered two pieces of advice for those who may be considering a nursing career or may be in nursing school now. The first is to never give up; there is light at the end of the tunnel, and that tunnel is laden with valuable information. The second is to take care of yourself. One cannot take care of patients if they cannot take care of themselves.

Jessica attributes the foundation of her successful nursing career to Cox College, and to the networking opportunities she received that resulted in her first job on a medical surgical floor. Lifelong learning is one of Cox College’s core values, and Jessica puts this value into practice every day in her workplace. The five years she spent in the emergency room opened her eyes to so many aspects of health care. She also realized that a healthy lifestyle can be a much more effective strategy for avoiding chronic diseases than many modern medicines. This has motivated her to stay active, and even sparked a new career path. Jessica plans to merge her career and passion, health and fitness, by using her CrossFit platform. She intends to help inform the public that diet and exercise is truly the least invasive intervention. Even though it may be a less traditional career path, Jessica is excited to venture outside the box and pursue what she is truly passionate about.

Jessica Griffith is a perfect example of lifelong learning and perseverance. She is currently fighting to keep her title as the fittest nurse in the world, as the 2018 CrossFit Open is currently in session. If she makes the top 20 in her region, she will move on to regionals. A top 5 finish at regionals will qualify her for the CrossFit games in July.

Lindsey Brockman is following in her family’s footsteps

Story by Eric Baker

Lindsey Brockman is a Springfield, Missouri native who grew up surrounded by the health care professions. From an early age, she remembers making “the rounds” with her father, Dr. Don Brockman. Starting their day at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), they would peer through the windows at the smallest of patients before making their way to the Pediatric floor, grabbing graham crackers and grape juice along the way. While her dad was seeing patients, Lindsey would pass the time by sitting at the nurse’s station, pretending to chart or schedule patients for her dad. Her grandmother, Darlys Shelton (an alumnus of Burge School of Nursing class of 1963), was a nurse at the hospital and would teach Lindsey various medical terms until she had them memorized.

Lindsey graduated from Glendale High School as Valedictorian in 2013. She pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated Magna Cum Laude in just three years. With her faith being at the forefront of her life, she decided to attend the Kanakuk Institute in Branson, Missouri. The Institute offered an 8-month graduate discipleship program, teaching biblical knowledge and leadership skills. It was there she felt God calling her to become a nurse. She knew this would be her ministry.

In addition to her family’s medical heritage, Lindsey has also been on the receiving end of extensive medical care. She was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disorder, and has undergone two bowel resections and hip surgeries. In both situations, she experienced the depth of caring nurses bring to their patients. Knowing how much nurses influenced her life, and because of the spiritual calling she received at the Kanakuk Institute, she made the decision to go to nursing school.

Choosing Cox College was easy for Lindsey because she wanted to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps. Lindsey remembers a favorite story her grandmother would tell about how she met Lindsey’s grandfather. He was a new Missouri State Trooper who came to the hospital to investigate a fatal accident during one of her grandmother’s shifts. After only six weeks of being acquainted with one another, the pair became engaged and married six months later. Today, they have enjoyed 54 wonderful years together.

Lindsey loves the virtual hospital and the simulation lab at Cox College, where students feel like they are in a real hospital setting, not a classroom. She is grateful to the staff and faculty, stating they all “make students feel like they genuinely care for them and want them to succeed.” She also appreciates the flexibility in the health care programs.

“My grandmother and I both agree that Cox College is a great institution. They have been teaching health care providers for over a century, and its students graduate at a high rate. The staff is excellent and eager to work with each student to help them in their health care journey.” In May of 2018, Lindsey and her dad traveled to Haiti on Cox College’s medical mission trip. Lindsey stated, “I love how Cox College offers real-world cultural and clinical experiences for their students.” She finally had the opportunity to work alongside her dad as a nurse.

Lindsey will be graduating with the BSN-Accelerated cohort in the Spring of 2019. Her goal is to become an NICU Nurse.
